Ståle Navrud
Ståle Navrud is a Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the School of Economics and Business at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and holds an adjunct position at Menon Economics.
He has extensive research and advisory experience in socio-economic analyses for national and international research and policy institutions, with a particular focus on economic valuation of nature loss, water quality, air quality, outdoor recreation, biodiversity conservation, invasive species, ecosystem services (marine, terrestrial, and aquatic), cultural heritage, landscape aesthetics, environmental public health, and the environmental and health impacts of energy projects (especially hydropower and wind power), transport, chemicals, and plastic pollution.
Ståle has conducted assignments and served as an advisor for Norwegian agencies such as the Norwegian Environment Agency, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Nye Veier, the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the Railway Directorate, the Ministry of Finance, and the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Internationally, he has worked with the European Environment Agency (EEA), European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the European Commission (DG Environment, DG Transport and Mobility), WHO, OECD, the World Bank, the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the German Environment Agency, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and Economic Council, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket), and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
He has published over 100 scientific articles and book chapters and has co-edited three books:
- Pricing the European Environment (Scandinavian University Press/Oxford University Press)
- Valuing Cultural Heritage (Edward Elgar Publishing)
- Environmental Value Transfer (Springer Publishing)
Ståle was a Review Editor for Economics of Climate Adaptation in the Fifth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and currently serves as an Expert Reviewer for the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the UN Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects. He is also a member of national mirror committees and international working groups for ISO 14000 standards on corporate environmental management and sustainability reporting.
He holds a Dr. Scient degree in Environmental and Resource Economics from NMBU and a Master’s degree in Natural Resource Management and Economics from the same institution. Ståle has been a Visiting Scholar and Fulbright Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), UC San Diego, and the University of New Mexico."
