The seafood industry is one of mainland Norway's largest export sectors. At the same time, the regulation of the industry is a politically contentious area. There is a recurring trade-off between exploiting fishery resources, environmental considerations, and the need for value creation. These trade-offs give rise to a wide range of socio-economic issues.

At Menon, we combine broad methodological expertise with a deep understanding of the sector’s regulatory framework for fisheries and aquaculture. We also have good knowledge of ongoing political processes and current trends in the industry. We stand out from other consultancy providers by combining theoretical insight with practical knowledge of regulations and empirical data. In our seafood projects, we draw on Menon's extensive experience in socio-economic assessments of public instruments and regulations. Our analyses are distinguished by their thorough examination of the economic trade-offs in the seafood industry. We ensure our assessments are relevant to decision-makers, with our work cited, for example, in the Aquaculture Committee's report and the Quota White Paper.

Menon has also developed registry databases for analysing economic activity in the business sector, which we use in our analyses. We have established a complete population of companies within the seafood industry, from capture and aquaculture companies to equipment suppliers and sales channels. This population is used to create an overview of employment, value creation, ownership, and productivity within the sector as a whole, its segments, and various geographical units. Menon has conducted studies for a range of stakeholders in the field, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, the Norwegian Seafood Federation, the Norwegian Environment Agency, Norwegian Seafood Association, the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Norske Lakseelver, and the Animal Protection Alliance.
