The value of the health industry – executive summary
This report aims to describe the scope of the health industry, its development and its contribution to Norwegian society. The report therefore extends across a wide range of themes. We calculate the health industry’s value creation, revenue, job creation, productivity and profitability. We measure total research and innovation results in the health industry and we uncover entrepreneurial companies’ capital requirements, the health industry’s growth bottlenecks and internationalization. We furthermore measure the health industry’s exports and the benefits the health industry creates for society.
The main findings are:
1. High growth in all parts of the private health industry
2. R&D spending increased by 25% to more than 2.25 BNOK in 2016
3. Private health industry exports reached 21.5 BNOK in 2016
4. Strong growth in innovation – lack of risk-willing capital acts as a barrier
5. Large potential society-wide gains from innovation in the private health industry – requires hospitals and municipalities to adopt new solutions and technologies
